Verdict

One of the cheapest annual plans around with usable group chat and voice, but memory across sessions is weak, voice and video burn Energy on every tier, and the iOS app is gone from the App Store.

What works

Premium at $29.99 a year is among the lowest prices in the category Group chats where several characters interact Voice calls and a large pool of user-made characters Ultra tier model noticeably better at long threads

What holds it back

Long-term and emotional memory tested poorly across sessions Energy is spent on voice and video on every plan; video is about 100 Energy a clip No iOS app since early 2026; moderation record criticised after a 2025 investigation

What Botify AI is

Botify AI is a character-chat platform from Ex-Human Inc., a US company, launched in 2021. It hosts a large library of user-created bots, including many modelled on celebrities and fictional characters, and lets you build your own with a voice and an AI-generated avatar. It runs on the web and Android; the native iOS app was removed from the App Store in early 2026, and the US listing now returns nothing, so iPhone users are limited to the browser.

Features

Text roleplay is the centre, with group chats in which several characters respond to each other, which reviewers single out as the most entertaining part. Voice calls and voice replies are available, plus AI selfies and short video clips. Memory is the weak spot: one structured test found about 78% recall of basic facts, a third of contextual details and roughly a fifth of emotional continuity across sessions. The ‘Ultra’ model added in 2025 is reported to be more nuanced and harder to derail than the base model.

Pricing

Prices reported from the app in 2026: Premium at $7.99 per week or $29.99 per year (about $2.50 a month), and Ultra at $14.99 per week or $79.99 per year (about $6.67 a month). Premium brings unlimited text, the mature toggle, voice calls, custom characters and monthly Energy refills; Ultra adds the better model, priority responses and more Energy. We could not load a pricing page on botify.ai itself, so treat the figures as reported rather than confirmed.

Energy is the credit layer. New accounts receive 50 Energy; voice replies cost about one or two each and a video clip about 100, so a single video wipes out the starter balance. Energy packs cost from $4.99. Because Energy applies on Premium and Ultra too, the headline price understates what media-heavy use costs. The free tier gives limited daily messages with ads.

Content policy

The terms say users must be 18 or over and that the service is not intended to operate as an adult or pornographic service, yet paid tiers include a ‘mature-themed mode’ that unlocks adult roleplay with what the company calls clear boundaries. Age is self-declared. A February 2025 MIT Technology Review investigation found sexualised bots depicting underage celebrities; the company said it was tightening its rules, and no independent audit of the changes has been published. The stated policy is therefore partial and the enforcement record is mixed.

Who it is for

Botify suits budget-conscious users who mainly want entertaining group roleplay and voice on Android or the web, and who use media sparingly. It is a poor fit for anyone who wants a companion that remembers the emotional arc of a relationship, an iPhone app, or an unambiguous adult policy.
