Verdict

A vast free character library with published App Store prices, let down by ads every few messages, memory that is paywalled by tier, blur that cannot be fully removed, and a UK advertising ruling over “no filters” claims.

What works

Free, indefinite access to public characters and character creation Prices are visible on the App Store: Standard $9.90, Premium $19.90, Ultimate $29.90 a month Character voices can be picked or blended from a library Native iOS and Android apps plus web

What holds it back

Ads roughly every five to ten messages on free, with a coins-and-Opals economy on top Memory scales by tier; long or permanent memory sits on Premium and Ultimate Terms ban pornographic content and blur adult images; a 2025 UK ASA ruling banned a “No Filters” ad

What PolyBuzz is

PolyBuzz, formerly Poly.AI, is a character chat app published by Cloud Whale Interactive Technology on the app stores, with its website terms naming a Hong Kong entity as operator. It launched in May 2023 and claims a character library in the tens of millions, a figure we do not verify. It runs on iOS, Android and the web and adds a webtoon and manga library alongside chat.

Features

Users chat with public characters or build their own for free, with voices chosen or blended from a library. Memberships add stronger memory models, unlimited voice listening and no ads; the top tier is marketed with permanent memory, and Trustpilot users complain about paying a lot for it. An image generator handles avatars and “memory scenes” bought with coins. Coins are earned or bought and spent on regenerating replies, extending voice chat and unlocking scenes; Opals are a premium currency. There is no video and no group chat that we could find.

Pricing

The App Store lists Standard at $4.99 a week or $9.90 a month, Premium at $19.90 a month and Ultimate at $29.90 a month; annual prices are reported by third parties at $99, $199 and $299. Coins cost $2.49 for 1,000 up to $19.90 for 20,000, and 1,000 Opals cost $5.90. The free tier is indefinite with ads that reviewers place every five to ten messages. Refunds are excluded by the terms even after cancellation.

Content policy

The terms require users to be 18, with a date-of-birth gate and mandatory third-party verification for UK users through Ondato or Yoti, while the FAQ also describes a Teen Mode, which is contradictory. Public display of adult content is prohibited and characters can be flagged for pornography. In private chats mature themes are tolerated, but explicit content is against the written terms and adult images are blurred, a setting that third-party guides say cannot be fully disabled. In May 2025 the UK Advertising Standards Authority upheld complaints about a PolyBuzz ad promising “No Filters” inside a 12+ game.

Who it is for

Casual users who want a large free character library on their phone and can tolerate ads. Anyone who wants strong memory without paying for the top tier, or explicit content that is actually permitted, should look elsewhere.
