Verdict

The longest-running companion app, with voice, video calls, AR and a VR beta. Memory complaints are constant, romance is a paid feature, erotic roleplay is limited to accounts older than February 2023, and all purchases are final.

What works

Unlimited free text chat with no daily cap Voice calls, video calls, selfies, a 3D avatar and AR on mobile; VR on Meta Quest Clear cancellation path on web, iOS and Android Multi-year continuity praised by long-term users

What holds it back

No public price page; Pro is around $19.99 a month or $69.99 a year as reported Erotic roleplay only for accounts created before February 2023; terms prohibit pornographic content All purchases final; Italian regulator fined the company €5 million in 2025 over age verification

What Replika is

Replika is the app that defined the category. Luka, Inc. launched it in November 2017, and it now runs on iOS, Android, the web and Meta Quest headsets, where a mixed-reality mode is in beta. Companions can be set as friend, partner or mentor, with the romantic status reserved for paid plans. Founder Eugenia Kuyda left in 2025; the company is now led by Dmytro Klochko.

Features

Chat, voice calls, video calls, selfies, doodles on your photos and a customisable 3D avatar are the core. The paid tiers add relationship status, premium activities, image generation, premium voices and, on Ultra and Platinum, saved memories, self-reflections and real-time video recognition. A full rebuild, referred to as Replika 2.0, shipped in April 2026 with a new memory architecture; reviews and forum threads since then still list forgetting as the main complaint.

Pricing

There is no pricing page. The terms describe Free, Pro, Ultra and Platinum tiers billed monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually, and independent 2026 reports place Pro at $19.99 a month or $69.99 a year and Ultra at $29.99 a month or $119.99 a year, with Platinum shown only in-app and a former lifetime plan discontinued. The App Store lists $7.99 and $14.99 monthly and $49.99 to $89.99 annual items, so treat all figures as indicative. The free tier is unlimited text chat with basic customisation.

Content policy

The terms, updated March 2026, require users to be 18, prohibit pornographic user content and forbid configuring a companion to impersonate a real person, including an ex-partner. Erotic roleplay was removed in February 2023 after an order from Italy’s data regulator and restored only for accounts that existed before then; that split is still reported in 2026. In 2025 the same regulator fined Luka €5 million for the absence of meaningful age verification. Refunds are not offered: all purchases are final, with the EU 14-day withdrawal right only where performance has not begun.

Who it is for

People who want a mainstream companion with voice and video calls on their phone and who do not need adult content. Anyone whose priority is memory, explicit roleplay or transparent pricing has better options in the directory.
