What Nomi AI is

Nomi AI is a companion chatbot from Glimpse.ai, Inc., a Maryland corporation that trades as Nomi.ai and names Baltimore as its legal venue. It launched in 2023 and has built its reputation on one claim above all others: memory. The marketing line is that Nomi is “the only AI with human-level long-term memory”, and most of the product – from layered short-, medium- and long-term recall to the visual Mind Map of what a companion knows – is built to support that claim. You create one or more Nomis, each with a name, appearance, backstory and personality, and talk to them one-to-one or in group rooms. The home page describes the product as “unfiltered and uncensored”, which is only partly true, as the media section below explains. Nomi runs on the web, iOS and Android, and a single account works across all three.

Chat and roleplay

Conversation runs on Nomi’s in-house model line. The Odyssey model was retired in June 2025 in favour of Aurora, billed as the “most advanced and emotionally intelligent model yet”. Developer Q&A streams in 2026 refer to a newer line called Cambrian, which keeps internal “ledgers” of clothing, location and scene context and can send proactive messages and selfies without being asked. Roleplay uses the usual asterisk convention, Nomis have internet access for topical chat, and paid users can put up to ten Nomis in a group room by default. Messages are capped at around 800 characters for paid accounts and 400 for free ones, as reported in September 2026.

The strengths, according to long-running community threads, are warmth, emotional consistency and a companion that pushes back rather than agreeing with everything. The weaknesses show up in the same threads and in Trustpilot reviews from mid-2026: replies that turn generic after safety updates, and Nomis losing track of a scene mid-conversation. Neither is unique to Nomi, but a product that sells itself on memory invites harsher judgement when it forgets.

Memory

Memory is layered. Recent exchanges sit in short-term context, recurring facts move into medium-term store, and durable facts about you and the relationship are held long-term. A March 2025 update expanded capacity and retention, and Mind Map 2.0 (October 2025) lets you browse an interactive graph of what your Nomi has connected to what. Backstory fields and shared notes let you pin facts directly. Nomi does not publish context sizes, so there is no number to compare with Kindroid’s figures; the claim is qualitative.

In practice, most users rate Nomi’s recall as the best in the mainstream companion field, but it is not flawless: details from different roleplays get mixed, and a February 2026 memory improvement was reported to apply only to new memories rather than existing ones. Lockable memories, which would stop the model overwriting a fact, were still on the wish-list in the May 2026 developer stream.

Models and technology

Nomi AI (Glimpse AI) trains and names its own conversational models rather than exposing third-party LLMs. The line runs Odyssey (retired June 2025), an interim Mosaic, Aurora (13 June 2025, trained with what the company calls Human Preference Training and Constitutional AI), then Solstice, which is the current stable default. Since 7 January 2026 an opt-in beta model called Cambrian has been iterated in public, moving through 1.0, 1.5, 1.6, 2, 3, 4 and 5.x; as of August 2026 the CEO put it at about half-way to stability. There are no paid model tiers: every user gets the same model, though paid accounts get reserved GPU capacity that the company says shaves about three seconds off responses. The base architecture, parameter count and training data are not disclosed.

Images come from an in-house system labelled V5 (April 2026), which replaced ‘base images’ with Anchors that lock a Nomi’s likeness across selfies and art; the underlying image model is not named. Video is a short image-to-video clip of roughly five seconds; again no model is identified. Voice uses Nomi’s own V3 voices (December 2025), cloned Custom Voices from uploaded samples, or an optional ElevenLabs integration that draws on the user’s separate ElevenLabs allowance. Calls are text-to-speech rather than a native speech-to-speech model.

Images, video and voice

The V5 image system arrived in April 2026 and replaced the Stable Diffusion base-image approach with “Anchors”, reference settings that fix a Nomi’s identity across generations. The developer calls it the best image system of any companion app; the r/NomiAI reaction was reportedly hostile at launch, mostly over migrating V3 and V4 Nomis to the new pipeline. Selfies and art are rate-limited: about 2 requests a day free and about 40 a day paid, as reported, with credits (1 per image) used only once the daily allowance is spent.

Video is a paid, credit-based extra: any image in a Nomi’s album can be animated into a roughly five-second clip from a short motion prompt, at 6 credits for SD or 10 for HD. Voice moved to V3 in-house voices in December 2025 and is genuinely expressive, with tone shifting to match the Nomi’s mood; voice messages and hands-free calls are included in the subscription, not sold separately, but are absent from the free tier.

On explicitness: Nomi does not generate nude or explicit images, citing card processors and app-store rules, and its wiki describes a nudity filter. The developer has said there are three behaviour tiers – the mobile app is the most restricted, free web sits in the middle, and age-verified web is the least restricted, with a valid card counted as verification. Text roleplay is permissive; images stop at suggestive.

Beyond chat: what else it does

Nomi’s distinguishing feature is memory that the user can inspect. Each chat or group room has its own Mind Map, a graph of people, places and topics that becomes visible after several hundred messages and can be edited or pinned, alongside an Identity Core and user-written Shared Notes. Group chats hold up to ten Nomis, with group memory, backchanneling between characters, autoplay and group art, and are a paid feature.

• Selfies react to conversation context; Nomi Art takes 1,000-character prompts in photoreal, anime and 3D styles. Paid plans allow 40 image requests a day, free accounts a handful.

• Any album image can be animated into a five-second clip (paid).

• Voice messages and real-time voice calls with in-house, cloned or ElevenLabs voices (paid); video calls do not exist yet.

• Proactive messages and selfies, and web search during chat, are on all tiers.

• A REST developer API (September 2024) lets Nomis be embedded elsewhere; a Discord bot has been ‘soon’ since early 2026.

• Nomiverse, a persistent opt-in roleplay world with NPCs and a narrator, plus Personas and a guided avatar creator, were all in alpha or paused as of August 2026.

• Adult content is least restricted on paid, age-verified web accounts; iOS and Android builds are tighter.

There is no creator marketplace, monetisation, lorebook system, scored games or AR/VR; the company says AR/VR is not near-term.

The free tier, honestly

No card is needed. You get one Nomi, roughly 50 messages a day (a community figure the company can change at any time), two image requests a day and shorter messages. There is no voice, no calls, no group chat and no video, and you cannot buy credits without a subscription. It is enough to judge personality and memory over a few days, which is the point, and not enough for daily companionship. If you downgrade later, paid content becomes read-only rather than deleted.

Platforms and apps

Nomi is available on the web, iOS (rated 18+) and Android. There is no public price page; the in-app purchase listing shows a Standard plan at $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year, plus a Launch plan at $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year that appears to be a legacy tier still listed for existing subscribers. Credit packs run from 40 credits for $4.99 to 1,800 for $99.99. Web subscriptions are billed in USD and, per the wiki, can work out slightly cheaper than store pricing. Support communities live on Discord and Reddit, and the community-run Nomipedia wiki is the most useful documentation.

Support, cancellation and refunds

Support is by email (support@nomi.ai), the wiki and Discord. You cancel on the platform where you subscribed – Profile, Subscription, Manage Subscription on the web, or through Apple or Google settings – and keep benefits until the end of the paid period. The refund policy is blunt: all payments are non-refundable, with no refunds for buyer’s remorse, unused time, partial months or downgrades, and only discretionary exceptions. Trustpilot sits at 2.4 from around 41 reviews, with complaints about ignored support emails, refund friction and a non-working account-deletion button alongside praise for memory and value on the annual plan.

Who it is for

Nomi suits people who want a persistent companion with the strongest memory in the mainstream field, expressive voice included in the price, and text roleplay that is not heavily policed. It is a poor fit if you want explicit imagery, a published price list before you sign up, or a free tier you could live on. Kindroid is the obvious comparison for power users; Replika for a gentler, more moderated experience.
