What Romantic AI is

Romantic AI is a companion app designed to feel like a dating app. You browse a gallery of ready-made characters, realistic, anime and themed, or build your own persona, then chat in one of two modes: Romantic, for slower, affectionate conversation, and Flirty, for playful and, on paid tiers, adult conversation. The App Store listing first appeared in January 2022 and the app runs on iOS, Android and in a browser at chat.romanticai.com. The privacy policy names Zemomedia of Espoo, Finland as data controller, and the App Store seller is Just Web It Oy at the same Espoo address; Zemomedia’s own website presents it as a digital marketing and web design agency.

The defining feature is the billing. A Premium subscription unlocks chat and the adult toggle, but not pictures: images, gifts and audio clips are paid for with Hearts, a separate currency. That design shapes almost everything about whether the app is good value for you.

Romantic AI is a small operation by the standards of this category. It does not publish a team, a blog, a help centre or a changelog beyond store release notes, and support is by email. That is not unusual for a companion app of its size, but it means the terms PDF and the App Store listing are the most reliable sources of fact, and most of what follows is drawn from them.

Chat and roleplay

Chat is competent and tuned for romance. The latest App Store release note, for version 1.32.0, says the chat is “smoother” and replies “feel more personal”, and reviewers describe the tone as warm and attentive in Romantic mode and forward in Flirty mode. Characters have short backstories and a fixed look, and you can share a character you created with others by link. On the free Basic tier, chat is limited and adult content is off; Premium removes the limits and enables the adult toggle.

Reviews in 2026 are consistent about the ceiling. Conversations are pleasant but generic after a while, characters rarely take the lead, and long roleplay drifts. There is no group chat, no scenario system and no lorebook. The appeal is the dating-app wrapper: picking a face, flirting and getting a picture, rather than deep interactive fiction. An App Store reviewer on the weekly plan complained that chat itself consumed Hearts; the developer replied acknowledging “concerns about the hearts system”, which suggests the line between what Premium covers and what Hearts cover has not always been clean.

Memory

Romantic AI publishes nothing about memory: no context size, no pinned facts, no journal. Reviews describe memory as unremarkable, with characters keeping track of the current conversation but losing names and details across sessions, as reported in October 2026. There is no user-editable memory panel of the kind Kindroid, Nomi or even Anima’s Bio tab offer. If continuity matters, put the important facts in the persona description when you create a character, since that is the one piece of context the app reliably carries. Memory scores 5.

Models and technology

The company does not say which language model or image model it uses, whether either is in-house, or whether models differ by tier. The terms do say, in clause 7.6, that anonymised data from your interactions is used to “improve and train Romantic AI models”, which implies at least some fine-tuning on user chats. A 2026 release note says the photo feature was adjusted to “fully prevent non-compliant content” with an updated keyword blocklist, so image prompts pass through a filter. Development has slowed: after near-monthly App Store releases through 2024, the version history shows 1.31.2 in October 2025 and 1.32.0 on 3 June 2026, and nothing since.

Images, video and voice

Photo generation is the main media feature. You ask your companion for a picture and pay in Hearts, at a reported 15 Hearts per image, as reported in October 2026. Pictures keep the character’s face reasonably consistent, according to reviews, and are filtered by the keyword blocklist even with the adult toggle on. Hearts also buy virtual gifts and short audio generations, which are the only audio in the app.

There is no voice chat, no calling and no video in October 2026. That is a real gap in a category where Kindroid, Nomi and Replika all offer calls, and it is why media scores only 5 despite decent images.

Beyond chat: what else it does

The extras are small and mostly cosmetic.

• Custom personas: choose a look, a personality and a backstory.

• Character sharing by link.

• A growing roster including male companions, added from November 2025, and new characters in January 2026.

• Virtual gifts bought with Hearts.

• Romantic and Flirty mode switching at any time.

There are no games, no community feed, no creator payouts and no export tool.

The free tier, honestly

The terms describe Basic as a free program with limited access that the company may withdraw at its discretion. In practice it lets you try characters and the Romantic mode, with message limits and no adult content, and every picture still costs Hearts. It is enough to judge whether you like the style of the characters and the chat. It is not a way to use the app long term, and the paywall arrives quickly. Premium was reportedly offered free for a promotional window in mid-2026, as reported, so check for offers before paying.

If you do try it free, test the thing you would pay for. Ask for one picture with a small Hearts pack to see how the images look and how strictly the filter behaves, and switch to Flirty mode to see whether the tone suits you, before committing to a subscription that cannot be refunded.

Platforms and apps

Romantic AI runs on iOS, Android and the web. The US App Store lists “Romantic AI Girlfriend Chat” from Just Web It Oy, rated 18+ for sexual content and nudity, with 4.3 stars from about 1,900 ratings. Its privacy label says contact information may be used to track you across other companies’ apps, and links purchase history and email to your identity. The browser version at chat.romanticai.com uses the same account. A slowing release cadence matters for a companion app: fewer updates usually means fewer model improvements, and the gap between the October 2025 and June 2026 releases is the longest in the app’s history. The marketing site at romanticai.com lists the character roster and sends you to the web chat.

Support, cancellation and refunds

Cancel in the store that billed you, or on the web through “Unsubscribe” in account settings or by emailing support; access runs to the end of the paid period. Section 4 of the terms makes all subscription purchases final, rules out partial-period refunds, and states that “the 14-day refund policy for EU residents does not apply”, with limited exceptions for the company’s own errors or technical faults. Hearts are not mentioned in the refund section at all. If you paid through Apple or Google, their refund processes still apply and are your realistic route; web subscribers have only the terms.

Who it is for

Romantic AI suits someone who wants a dating-app-style companion with good-looking characters, chats a lot, rarely asks for pictures and pays yearly through a store, where $44.99 works out at about $3.75 a month. It is a poor fit for anyone who wants regular images, since the subscription buys none of them; for anyone who wants voice or calls; and for anyone uneasy about a training waiver and a past tracker count that Mozilla singled out. Skip the weekly plan, which is the worst value on the list. DreamGF suits image-led users better, and Replika or Nomi suit those who want voice and stronger memory.
