What Chai is

Chai is a mobile character-chat app from Chai Research Corp., founded in 2021 by William Beauchamp, a former quantitative trader, and now based in Palo Alto, California. It is the largest thing in this batch by a wide margin: the company claims more than a million daily active users, a library of around 25 million user-created characters and over $55 million in funding from CoreWeave and AMD, and it runs its own models on a 5,000-GPU cluster. It is also the least like a companion app. Chai is a feed of bots to try, most of them made by other users, rather than one relationship you build over months. The apps for iOS and Android are the product; chai-research.com lists a web version as “coming soon”, while a separate site at chai-ai.com is reported to be the company’s “Chai Web Pro” with its own plan names.

Chat and roleplay

You pick a bot from the feed or search, or build one from a name, a short description and a few opening lines, and start typing. Chai’s in-house models are tuned on user feedback and “model blending” across several LLMs, and the writing style is fast, casual and eager to escalate a scene, which is why the app is popular for pulp roleplay. An Ultra subscription is reported to route chats through a stronger model (referred to in community coverage as Chai-6) with priority during busy hours; Premium does not change the model, only the limits. A Personas feature added in May 2026 lets you keep several user identities, and the July 2026 release notes mention bringing back the bot builder and search after a period without them.

The weaknesses are structural. Bots are only as good as their creator’s few hundred words of setup, so quality varies wildly. Content filtering is a moving target: the Safety Center says sexually explicit material is refused, in practice the model is permissive with suggestive scenes, and reviewers in 2026 complained of filters tripping on innocent words and of a “Message Removed” notice appearing mid-chat. There is no long-form character sheet, no lorebook and no group chat.

Memory

This is Chai’s weakest area and the company does not pretend otherwise. There is no published memory system, no pinned facts, and no persistent memory across sessions on any tier that we could find documented. Community reports consistently put usable recall at roughly 20 to 40 messages before the bot loses the thread, on Premium and Ultra as much as on free. A workaround that circulates on the subreddit is to write bot descriptions in structured tags, which reportedly stretches retention, but that is users compensating for the product. If continuity matters to you, Chai is the wrong tool.

Models and technology

Chai is unusual among companion apps in publishing a model timeline while naming almost nothing. Chai Research says it trains its own conversational LLMs and serves ‘51K unique LLMs’ from a 5,000-GPU cluster of NVIDIA A100/L40S and AMD MI300X/MI325X cards, pushing 1.2 trillion tokens a day. Its homepage dates the scale-ups: a 6B model in February 2023, 13B in April 2023, 24B in January 2025 and a 235B-A22B Mixture-of-Experts deployment in December 2025. The base checkpoints are not disclosed; the company started on GPT-J and its 2024 ‘Blending Is All You Need’ paper combined 6B and 13B open models, and the 235B-A22B label matches Qwen3’s naming, but Chai itself does not say.

What it does describe is the training loop: reward models built from thumbs-up, retries and conversation-length signals, best-of-4 then best-of-8 rejection sampling, PPO, DPO (August 2024) and GRPO (September 2025), with ‘blending’ (routing turns across several models in one chat) claimed to lift retention by 30%. Community fine-tunes submitted through Chaiverse are ranked by ELO on live traffic and folded into production.

Tier names in the app are ‘Premium’ and ‘Ultra’; third-party reviews say Ultra runs a model called Chai-6, which Chai has not confirmed. Chai Web Pro and ‘CHAI MAX’ promise ‘advanced’ or ‘most powerful’ models without naming them. In-chat image generation arrived in 2026 and text-to-speech voices exist, but the image and voice models are undisclosed; there is no video.

Images, video and voice

Chai is essentially text. Reports during 2026 describe a voice-output option in which some bots can read replies aloud with text-to-speech, apparently limited to Ultra and to a subset of characters, and a simple in-chat image request that produces basic pictures rather than consistent selfies of a character. Neither is documented on the company’s own site, so treat both as reported in September 2026. There is no voice input, no video, and no avatar generation of the kind Nomi and Kindroid offer. If you want media, this is not the app.

Beyond chat: what else it does

Chai positions itself as a ‘social AI platform’ rather than a companion: the product is a feed of user-made bots, creator profiles with followers, and rankings driven by likes. Anyone can publish a character from a few text fields, and the company counts more than 25 million bots with about 50,000 added daily; the bot builder was briefly removed and restored in the 31 July 2026 release.

• Chaiverse lets developers submit Hugging Face LLMs that are served to real users within hours, ranked by ELO and eligible for cash prizes (Season 4 paid $10,000 for first place). This is the platform’s closest thing to creator monetisation; bot makers themselves are not paid.

• In-chat image generation (selfies, simple scenes, roughly 15 seconds) with consistent character looks and an auto-generate option on higher tiers; a ‘200 Pieces’ purchase hints at a consumable currency.

• Text-to-speech voices, opt-in per session. There are no voice calls, video calls, group chats, scenarios, games, lorebooks or memory tools.

• Chai Web Pro is a separate browser product with its own accounts ($9.99/week or $159.99/year) and a ‘CHAI MAX’ add-on billed at $0.66 per 1,000 tokens or $90/month for higher rate limits.

• App tiers: free (about 70 messages per 2.5–3 hours, ads), Premium ($13.99/month) removes ads and timers, Ultra ($29.99/month) adds better models, priority queue and exclusive characters.

• 18+ with a mature-content toggle; OS-level age verification via Apple and Google APIs announced 9 March 2026.

2026 has been marked by regional free-tier cuts (January), unannounced token caps (February) and recurring outages, all of which drew user criticism.

The free tier, honestly

Chai grew on an ad-supported free tier and has spent 2026 unwinding it. Users describe a batch of around 70 free messages that recharges after roughly two and a half to three hours, with waits reported anywhere from one to 24 hours; each message reportedly costs one to five internal credits depending on reply length. In January 2026 the company introduced country-based access tiers that were widely criticised for poor communication, in February unannounced token limits froze conversations for some users for hours or days, and from April a regional paywall removed free chat in some countries altogether, a move the Australian eSafety Commissioner recorded as Chai “restricting free access” in response to its March 2026 findings. In the affected regions the free tier is a trial; elsewhere it is a rationed, ad-heavy way to browse bots. Any of this can change without notice, because it already has.

Platforms and apps

iOS and Android, both rated 18+. The App Store lists Premium at $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year and Ultra at $19.99 a week or $29.99 a month, plus a $9.99 “Premium Membership” item and “Pieces” at 200 for $2.79 whose purpose is not explained anywhere we could find. Weekly Premium at $5.99 and annual Ultra at $269.99 are reported but were not on the US listing when checked. Chai-ai.com offers “Pro” at $9.99 a week or $159.99 a year with a 24-hour trial, and a “CHAI MAX” add-on either metered at $0.66 per 1,000 generated tokens or $90 a month for double rate limits. Weekly billing, regional pricing and add-ons that do not match the app’s plan names make Chai the hardest of the three to cost. Google Play shows around 4.2 stars from more than 500,000 ratings and over 10 million installs; the App Store shows 4.3 from 276,000.

Support, cancellation and refunds

Support is an email address (hello@chai-research.com) and in-app reporting; there is no help centre. Subscriptions are bought through Apple or Google, so cancellation and refunds go through the stores and follow their rules; the EULA (updated 28 July 2026) only promises a refund where the app fails a store warranty. Reviewers report being charged for a full year immediately after what they took to be a free trial, and Trustpilot, at 2.5 from a handful of reviews, is dominated by billing complaints. The privacy notice (July 2026) says chats are used to fine-tune models after identifiers are removed and that data may be kept for up to five years after account deletion.

Who it is for

Chai is for people who want a very large, fast, cheap-to-sample library of user-made bots on a phone and who treat each chat as disposable. It is not for anyone who wants a companion that remembers them, media of any kind, a stable free tier or a bill they can predict. Character.AI is the closest like-for-like with stricter filters; PolyBuzz and Talkie compete for the same mobile audience.
