Character.AI review

Update, 14 October 2026: Character Technologies, the company behind Character.AI, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware on 12 October (case 26-11603) to sell the business in a court-supervised process it expects to finish by late November or early December 2026. The platform stays online in the meantime, and the company says it will be wound down if no buyer emerges who keeps it running. Disney is the opening bidder, offering $20 million for a non-exclusive licence to some of its intellectual property, which is not a commitment to keep the app. Paid plans continue and billing is unchanged for now. If you have chats or characters you care about, request a data export now: Character.AI’s help centre says exports can take 3–4 weeks and the download link lasts 7 days. What Character.AI is

Character.AI is the largest general-purpose character-chat platform, operated by Character Technologies, Inc. Users create and share bots with a name, a description and example dialogue; anyone can then chat with them. The library runs to tens of millions of characters, from fictional and historical figures to original personas and study helpers. It is not an adult companion app: its terms prohibit pornographic content, the App Store listing is rated 18+, and since 25 November 2025 users under 18 have no access to open-ended chat at all. What remains is a very large, moderated roleplay platform that now describes itself as an entertainment company, with three price levels and a growing set of formats. One caveat is new: on 18 September 2026 the company announced that its chief executive, Karandeep Anand, is leaving to become Disney’s chief technology officer and expects members of the technical team to join him. The announcement says the app remains live and that more information will follow.

Chat and roleplay

Conversation is the core. Chats are unlimited on every tier. The free “Basic” chat styles are PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr; the premium styles, DeepSqueak for sharper replies and LongSqueak for longer ones, are unlimited on c.ai+ and rationed as a “daily taste” on the cheaper Lite plan. Group chats, Scenes and Stories (a structured, branching format that is also the main mode available to teens) sit alongside the classic one-to-one thread. Community complaints are consistent on two points: the content filter, which redirects or refuses romantic and sexual escalation, and periodic model regressions; the April 2026 PipSqueak 2 rollout drew a sustained backlash over repetitive replies, as reported. If you want an uncensored partner, this is the wrong platform; if you want a huge cast of well-written SFW characters and a lively feed of user creations, it is still the reference point.

Memory

Memory has been the weak spot historically, and it has been patched rather than rebuilt. Pinned Messages lock lines into the context so the bot keeps referring to them; the company’s plan table gives 15 pins on the free tier and 30 on both Lite and c.ai+. The same table grades memory as Basic, Better and Best across the three tiers, without publishing sizes. Lorebook, launched in July 2026, lets creators attach keyword-triggered world notes to a character; the advanced version is reserved for c.ai+. There is still no true cross-chat long-term memory: a new thread with the same character starts fresh apart from your persona and pins. In practice, long roleplays drift after a few hundred messages unless you keep the pins current. Compared with companion apps built around a single persistent partner, this is adequate rather than strong.

Models and technology

Character.AI does not say which model sits behind any given conversation. What it exposes are chat styles, listed above; the older Roar, Meow, Nyan, Goro, Dynamic and Pawly styles were retired in spring 2026, and an 18+ “Soft Launch” style exists for subscribers, as reported. Historically the company trained its own dense transformers, the Kaiju family, and a research post states the team now builds on open-source models. No context-window figure has been published.

Image generation is now disclosed. A company post of 16 September 2026 describes the CAI-Image family, post-trained versions of the open-source Qwen-Image model, which draw Comics and power Imagine and Imagine Message. AvatarFX, an in-house model, animates a still image into a talking video with a watermark. The clip model behind Imagine Animate and the voice provider are not named. Age assurance combines an in-house age-estimation model with Persona’s ID and selfie checks.

Images, video and voice

Voice calls with characters are available on every tier. “Imagine” generates images inside a chat; images cost 10 Charms each and Imagine Animate turns an image into a short clip for 20 Charms, as reported. (c.ai) Comics, which launched in late August 2026 and was described in a company post on 2 September, turns a chat or a written premise into a multi-page comic, with consistent character art and a choice of visual styles; the company calls it a premium experience paid for in Charms, and an animated version and a Pro Mode for creators are promised. Charms are the platform’s micro-currency, earned through daily quests and now sold in packs. Everything visual is SFW and moderated.

Beyond chat: what else it does

Character.AI has spent 2025 and 2026 turning itself into an entertainment feed, so the list is long. Most of it is free to try; the media features run on Charms.

• Group chats: up to 10 Characters and 10 people, with Characters reacting to one another unprompted.

• Lorebook: keyword-triggered world entries shared across a cast; Basic on free and Lite, Advanced on c.ai+.

• Character Calls and Character Voice: two-way voice calls in several languages, plus custom voice creation.

• Imagine and Imagine Animate, paid in Charms.

• AvatarFX video intros, Scenes, Streams and the Community Feed with remixing.

• Stories: branching interactive fiction, open to under-18s.

• (c.ai) books, (c.ai) series studio microdramas and (c.ai) Comics.

• Blocking: since September 2026 you can block a user together with their Characters, posts, voices and Scenes.

There is no NSFW toggle; explicit content is filtered on every tier. There is no public API, no Discord or Telegram bot, and creators earn Charms rather than money.

The free tier, honestly

The free tier is still generous on the thing that matters, unlimited messaging with every public character, but it has been steadily monetised. The company’s own table describes it as full ads, slow mode, basic memory, 15 pins and limited feature allowances. Since March 2026 free chats carry mid-chat ads and a daily swipe (regenerate) cap of around 400, as reported, and peak-hour slow mode queues free users behind subscribers. Extra swipes, ad-free time and slow-mode skips can be bought with Charms, which can themselves now be bought with money. Lite, at $4.99 a month in the US, reduces the ads and slow mode without removing them. None of this stops you chatting, but the friction is deliberate. For casual, once-a-day use the free tier remains one of the most complete in the category.

Platforms and apps

Character.AI runs on the web, iOS and Android, with the same account and history across all three; a Lite or c.ai+ subscription bought on one works on the others. The iOS listing is rated 18+ and was at version 1.17.3, dated 8 September 2026, when checked. Under-18s can use Stories, the Feed, Series and Comics but not open-ended chat. Age assurance uses Character.AI’s own signals first and, where it cannot confirm you are an adult, a Persona-run selfie or ID check.

Support, cancellation and refunds

There is a searchable help centre and an email and ticket contact form; there is no live chat, and response times of several days are commonly reported. The plan table lists premium support as a c.ai+ benefit. Billing questions for app-store purchases are redirected to Apple or Google. Cancellation is done wherever you subscribed: App Store subscriptions, Google Play subscriptions, or the billing page reachable from account settings on the web. Access continues to the end of the paid period. The stated policy is no partial refunds for unused time; users report some case-by-case goodwill refunds from support, but that is not a documented right. Charms purchases are consumable and treated as final. Creators are now told when their content is moderated and why, and can appeal.

Who it is for

Character.AI suits adults who want a vast library of SFW characters, fandom roleplay, storytelling formats and the occasional voice call, at a price that is hard to beat. It is a poor fit for anyone seeking romantic or sexual companionship, for anyone who resents ads and micro-currencies, and for parents who assumed the app was teen-safe: it is explicitly not a chat product for minors. Two things argue for paying monthly rather than yearly for now: the 2025 and 2026 lawsuits, and a leadership change whose consequences for the product the company has not yet explained.
