What Talkie is

Talkie is a character chat app in which you talk to AI personas, called Talkies, that other users have written, or build your own. It is operated by SUBSUP PTE. LTD., a Singapore company, and its site footer says it is “powered by MiniMax”, the Shanghai AI company that listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange on 9 January 2026. The product began in China as Glow in October 2022, launched internationally as Talkie in June 2023, and has a separate Chinese sibling called Xingye. By mid-2024 it was among the most downloaded free entertainment apps in the US, with about 11 million monthly users, as reported at the time. In October 2026 it runs on the web, on Android as “Talkie: Creative AI Community” and on iPhone as “Talkie Lab – AI Playground”, the name it took when it returned to the US App Store in February 2025.

The app is less a companion than a library. You browse anime, fantasy, gaming, celebrity-style and romance characters, chat with as many as you like, and collect “Soul Cards” tied to them. It is free to use without limit in time, paid for by ads, a daily message wall and an in-app economy of gems.

Chat and roleplay

Conversation is Talkie’s strength. The library is built by creators, some of them verified and paid a revenue share, and the best characters have detailed openings, consistent voices and a willingness to drive a scene rather than wait for you. Replies are fast and the writing is lively for a free product, which is why Talkie is often compared favourably with Character.AI by younger users. Characters can send voice lines, and some offer voice calls.

The limits are the rules. Talkie’s community guidelines, last updated on 24 January 2025, ban explicit sexual content and also content with “suggestive or implicit sexual undertones”, including suggestive poses, objectification and, specifically, characters involving tentacles. The FAQ says conversations are filtered automatically against regional laws and that character settings are moderated before publication by a mix of people and AI. In practice the filter is the most common complaint in reviews: romance characters are everywhere, but the moment a scene turns physical, replies are cut off or rewritten.

Memory

Talkie is unusually candid here. Its FAQ says that AI memory capacity “is technically limited, causing older conversations to be forgotten”. The Google Play listing promises Talkies that “evolve and adapt with extended memory”, which in practice refers to the longer context sold with Talkie+. Free chat history is reported to be kept for about 60 days, as reported in October 2026, and there are no user-editable memory notes of the kind Kindroid or Nomi offer. Long roleplays drift: characters forget names and earlier plot points after a few dozen exchanges. If continuity matters, restate key facts in your messages and export anything you want to keep.

Models and technology

Talkie runs on MiniMax’s own language models. The iOS listing names MiniMax Text-01, MiniMax’s large context model released in January 2025, and DeepSeek-V3 among the models it offers, and describes the app as a gateway to “the latest AI innovations”. MiniMax has said it builds role-play-specific models for its character products, but it does not say which model answers a given chat, how large it is, or whether conversations from Talkie are used to train it. MiniMax also makes the Hailuo video models and speech models, which is the likely source of Talkie’s voice and media tools, though Talkie does not confirm this.

Images, video and voice

The store descriptions list creation tools for “AI image, video, audio and music”, and the community feed carries short AI-made clips and pictures. Reviewers describe text-to-image generation for character art, one-way voice lines on many characters and voice calls capped at around two minutes on free accounts, as reported in October 2026. None of this has a published rate card: image and media tools are gated by a mix of Talkie+ and gems, and Talkie does not say what a picture costs. The content rules apply to media as strictly as to text, so image tools are for character portraits and scenes, not anything suggestive. Media is a side feature here, which is why the media sub-score is 4.

Beyond chat: what else it does

Talkie’s distinctive layer is collecting. Each character can have Soul Cards that you draw with gems, with rarer cards and limited event currencies during themed campaigns. Reviewers compare the loop to mobile gacha games, and it is where spending creeps up.

The free tier, honestly

Talkie’s terms describe a “Free Use” programme with no charge, and it is genuinely usable: every public character is available, and there is no trial clock. The costs are attention and patience. Free users see video ads of around 40 to 50 seconds, reported at roughly ten-minute intervals in long sessions, and hit a daily message wall reported at about 50 messages, as reported in October 2026. Calls are short, memory is the base level and the gem economy is pitched at you constantly. For someone who chats for half an hour a few times a week, the free tier is one of the better ones in the category; for daily long roleplay it becomes a nag.

Platforms and apps

Talkie runs in the browser at talkie-ai.com and in apps on both stores, under different names. On Google Play it is “Talkie: Creative AI Community” from SUBSUP, rated Teen with a “Sexual Themes” descriptor, marked as containing ads, with more than 50 million installs and 4.5 stars from about 854,000 reviews, last updated on 24 September 2026. On the US App Store it is “Talkie Lab – AI Playground”, rated 18+, with 4.7 stars from about 59,000 ratings and version 2.61.001 dated 22 September.

The store history is part of the picture. Talkie disappeared from the US App Store in December 2024, with MiniMax citing “technical reasons”, and came back in February 2025 under the Talkie Lab name. It was removed from Google Play between April and May 2026 and reinstated, as reported by third parties. No public explanation was given either time. Community discussion lives on Discord and the r/talkie subreddit.

Support, cancellation and refunds

Talkie+ and gems are sold only inside the apps and billed by Apple or Google. The terms say you can modify or cancel a subscription only through the store where you bought it, so there is no cancel button on the website. A cancelled plan runs to the end of the paid period and the account drops back to Free Use. The terms rule out refunds for partial months and the FAQ says gem recharges are non-refundable except for system errors or duplicated transactions, which go to feedback@subsup.com. Anything else is a request to Apple or Google. Deleting the account, in the app or at talkie-ai.com/delete, is permanent and erases conversations, but it does not stop billing.

Who it is for

Talkie suits people who want creative, safe-for-work character roleplay for free, enjoy browsing a big library, and do not mind ads or a collecting game on the side. Writers who want an audience for their own characters get a real creator programme. It is a poor fit for adults who want companionship with any romantic physicality, for anyone who needs memory that lasts, and for people uneasy about a Singapore operator with a Chinese parent and a policy that lets chats “learn from your interactions”. Parents should note that the terms admit users from 14 with no age check. Character.AI is the closest mainstream alternative with a published price; PolyBuzz is the looser, adults-only cousin.
