If the filter is your problem with Character.AI, the two closest replacements are Janitor AI and SpicyChat. Both copy its community-library format, both permit adult roleplay in writing, and both have a free tier you can actually use. Kindroid is the pick for one persistent companion with serious memory, SillyTavern for anyone willing to host their own front end, and MyBabes for people who want images, video and scored roleplay games on top of chat.

Character.AI is not going to meet adults halfway. Its rules prohibit pornographic and sexually explicit content on every tier, open-ended chat for under-18s was removed on 25 November 2025, and the 18+ “Soft Launch” chat style offered to c.ai+ subscribers is, as reported in September 2026, bolder but still non-explicit. The filter is a policy, not a bug.

How we picked

This list ranks apps for one job: replacing Character.AI for an adult who wants unfiltered text roleplay. Five criteria, in order of weight. First, the quality of the text roleplay itself, including model choice and reply length. Second, what the terms say about adult content, not what the homepage says, because an app that tolerates what its contract bans can change overnight. Third, memory and context, with published numbers preferred over adjectives. Fourth, a free tier that works as more than a demo. Fifth, what the app adds that Character.AI lacks. Radar scores are quoted for reference, but the order is on merit for this angle, not by overall score.

Janitor AI is where most people leaving Character.AI land first, for a simple reason: it is the same idea without the filter, and the core of it is free. Users write and publish character cards, the library runs to millions, and chat on the in-house JLLM model is unlimited with no card on file. The terms require users to be 18 or older and permit explicit content between adult characters on the website. The iOS and Android apps (“Janitor: Interactive Stories”) follow stricter store rules.

The feature that sets Janitor apart is model choice. Free users can paste in an API key or proxy for DeepSeek, Claude, GPT, Gemini or a self-hosted model. Since 30 July 2026, Janitor+ subscribers can do the same inside the site through the Router, which lists around 70 third-party models billed per token. Scripts, Janitor’s lorebook system, cover the ground that Character.AI’s Lorebook does.

Cost. Free, or Janitor+ at $12.99 a month, which multiplies JLLM’s context by five (to roughly 40,000 to 45,000 tokens by third-party estimate), adds priority replies and a monthly allowance of swipes on frontier models.

The catch. Free JLLM context is only about 9,000 tokens, so long scenes lose early detail after 25 to 30 exchanges. An architecture change on 20 April 2026 brought widely reported repetition, and an experimental auto-summary feature switched on by mistake in August 2026 wiped context in around 15,000 chats before it was reverted. There are no images, video or voice at all, and fees are non-refundable.

Who it is for. Readers and writers of interactive fiction who want the biggest free unfiltered library, and anyone who already holds an API key. Radar score 6.7, held down mainly by the absence of media, which matters little for this list.

2. SpicyChat

SpicyChat, run by NextDay AI of Montreal, is the most direct structural copy of Character.AI: a public library of user-made bots with definitions, greetings and tags, plus an NSFW toggle that is meant to be used. You choose from a documented menu of open-weight models tied to your tier, and the company publishes its limits rather than hiding them. Free and Get A Taste run 8B and 12B models such as Stheno and Magnum. True Supporter opens 24B to 70B-class options. I’m All In adds Euryale 70B, WizardLM-2 8x22B, the in-house SpicyXL and DeepSeek V3.

What it adds over Character.AI beyond the toggle: Director Mode (a command line that steers the model mid-scene), Lorebooks with up to 5,000 entries on a private character, group chats of two to ten characters, and a Memory Manager that lets you read, edit and pin what the bot has stored.

Cost. Free with ads, then $5.95, $19.95 or $29.95 a month after the 8 September 2026 price rise. Existing subscribers keep their old price for as long as the plan stays active and unchanged.

The catch. Context is small: 4,096 tokens on Free and Get A Taste, 8,192 on True Supporter, 16,384 on the top tier, with replies capped at 180 or 300 tokens. People used to LongSqueak’s novella-length replies will notice. Apple removed the iOS app in August 2025 and Android is a sideloaded APK. NSFW requires a selfie or ID age check in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states.

Who it is for. Anyone who wants Character.AI’s format with adult content permitted and no technical setup. True Supporter is the tier where it becomes a long-term home. Radar score 6.6.

3. Kindroid

Kindroid takes the opposite approach to a character library. You author one or a few companions in detail (a 2,500-character backstory, key memories, a response directive, up to 500 keyphrase-triggered journal entries) and keep them for months. Its terms say openly that adult content between adult characters is permitted in private chats, which is rarer than it should be. If your real complaint about Character.AI is forgetfulness, this is the strongest answer here.

Kindroid publishes its memory in characters per tier: about 500,000 of total conversation context on Standard, 1.3 million with the Ultra add-on and 2.8 million with MAX, with 18K, 50K and 125K of that as short-term context. Character.AI publishes no context figure at all. The subscriber model since 29 March 2026 is Ember (V9), which desk reviews credit with holding a scenario and pushing back rather than mirroring. Voice calls run on ElevenLabs voices, and lip-synced live video calls opened to all subscribers on 25 March 2026.

Cost. Free tier with unlimited text on the weaker Lite model and two Kindroids. Standard is $13.99 a month on the web ($15.99 through the app stores). Ultra adds $24.99 and MAX a further $59.99, so the full memory stack is $98.97 a month.

The catch. There is no community catalogue to browse, so it replaces Character.AI’s companion use, not its fandom use. Voice, video and selfies all run on credit meters. The mobile apps filter image prompts and offer SFW video only, and there are no refunds.

Who it is for. People who want one persistent, uncensored partner or a small cast, and care more about continuity than variety. Radar score 7.6.

4. SillyTavern

SillyTavern is not a service. It is a free, open-source (AGPL-3.0) front end that you install on Windows, macOS, Linux, Docker or Android via Termux, then connect to whichever model you like: a local model, OpenRouter, any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, KoboldAI or the volunteer AI Horde. Its own documentation calls it “an LLM Frontend for Power Users”.

For roleplay quality it has the highest ceiling here, because the ceiling is whatever model you connect. It reads the same character-card format that the Janitor and Chub communities trade, so a library is a download away. World Info lorebooks, a summariser, vector storage that recalls old messages semantically, group chats and built-in retrieval from documents give it the best memory tooling in the directory. Extensions add image generation through Stable Diffusion or FLUX back ends and text-to-speech.

Cost. The software is free. A local model costs nothing per message if you own the hardware, while API providers bill per token, so it is either the cheapest or the most expensive option on this list.

The catch. Installation, updates, prompt presets and troubleshooting are all yours. There is no account, no mobile app, no support desk and no moderation layer, which also means content rules are those of your model provider. Commercial APIs have their own terms and some will refuse explicit content. A local model has none.

Who it is for. Technically comfortable adults who want full control of model, memory and privacy. Radar score 7.6.

5. MyBabes

MyBabes sits mid-table because this list ranks text roleplay first, and text is not where it leads. It is here for readers who want more than a chat window: an 18+ browser platform from Memora AI s.r.o. in Prague where the same character can chat, appear in generated images, be animated on a named video engine, star in an episodic story and front a scored roleplay game. Its “uncensored” marketing and its terms agree, within a published Blocked Content Policy that bans anything resembling minors, deepfakes of real people, violence, hate and illegal acts.

Chat comes in two model classes: “Normal” models, unlimited on paid plans, and “Plus” models with ten times the memory, which cost 0.2 tokens a message on Premium and are unlimited on Ultra. The public API documentation lists Qwen 3, Gemma 4 and Llama families. The part Character.AI has no equivalent for is Adventures: a creator sets a target, good and bad moves, a difficulty and a prize, and an AI referee scores every message. Video runs on eight named engines, from the in-house Wan 2.2 fine-tune to Wan 3.0 Pro and Seedance 2.5, with per-second token prices printed on the pricing page.

Cost. Free tier with daily token claims and no card. Premium is €14.99 a month or €9.99 a month on the 3-month plan, and Ultra is €34.99 or €23.33.

The catch. For pure prose roleplay, Janitor with a good external model or SillyTavern goes deeper, and both beat it on free chat, since free MyBabes messages cost 0.2 tokens each. There are no live voice calls and no native app, pricing is in euros only, the pricing page frames its prices as countdown “sales”, and the Adventures catalogue is still small.

Who it is for. Adults who want to make things with their characters as well as talk to them. Radar score 8.3 overall, which reflects media strength more than this list’s criteria.

6. Chub AI

Chub AI (its chat interface is known as Venus) grew out of the community that trades character cards and lorebooks for local front ends, then added hosted models so users do not have to run their own. It is the closest hosted equivalent to SillyTavern: an enormous library of importable cards, lorebook entries that inject world detail on keywords, and the option to plug in your own API key. The platform permits adult content between adults, with tags and filters to hide what you do not want to see.

The draw is the top tier. Mars gives unlimited generation on Soji, Chub’s own large model, described in 2026 reviews as a 671B DeepSeek-derived model launched in 2025, plus other large hosted models such as Asha 70B. Mercury, the cheaper tier, adds mid-size models with about 8K of context.

Cost. As reported in September 2026, Mercury is $5 a month and Mars $20 a month, but both bill in mandatory four-month blocks, so the real charges are about $20 and $80 up front. The free tier offers basic hosted models with limits, or unlimited use of your own API.

The catch. The four-month billing is the obvious one. The interface has a real learning curve, the default content filters need active management because the library is far less curated than Character.AI’s, and users report that card payments often fail, with much of the community paying in cryptocurrency. There is no image or video generation, the site is web-only, and refund terms were not visible during our research.

Who it is for. Experienced roleplayers who want cards, lorebooks and a very large hosted model without self-hosting. Radar score 6.4.

7. Nomi

Nomi, from Glimpse.ai in Maryland, takes the last place ahead of several apps with bigger libraries because its text roleplay is permissive in practice and its memory is among the best in mainstream companion apps. Memory is layered into short, medium and long-term stores, with a browsable Mind Map of what the companion has connected to what. Up to ten Nomis can share a group room, and voice messages and hands-free calls are included in the subscription rather than sold by the minute. Like Kindroid, it has no public catalogue.

The reason it ranks below Kindroid on this list is the paperwork. Nomi’s homepage says “unfiltered and uncensored”, but its terms (updated 16 January 2026) are silent on sexual content, so permission is implied rather than stated. The image system carries a nudity filter that blocks explicit output. The developer describes three behaviour tiers, with the mobile app the most restricted and age-verified web (a valid card counts) the least. Nomi publishes no context sizes.

Cost. $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year, per the App Store listing. There is no public price page.

The catch. The free tier is a trial: one Nomi and about 50 messages a day, as reported, with no voice or groups. Messages are capped at around 800 characters for paid accounts, as reported, which is short for prose-heavy roleplay. All payments are non-refundable and Trustpilot sits at 2.4 from a small sample.

Who it is for. People who used Character.AI mainly for one or two ongoing relationships and want warmth and recall more than explicit media. Radar score 6.9.

• CrushOn AI (Radar score 4.6). Often the first name in “Character.AI without a filter” searches, and its NSFW toggle does let most adult roleplay through. But its own terms prohibit “NSFW, pornographic or sexually explicit” material, so users rely on non-enforcement. The pricing page was unreachable in September 2026, premium models burn credits at many times the headline rate, there are no refunds, and the Google Play listing was removed in June 2026. SpicyChat offers the same format with terms that match the product.

• Chai (Radar score 4.2). Mobile-only with a large character feed, but its policy bans sexually explicit content, memory is widely described as a few dozen messages, and weekly billing is pushed at checkout.

• PolyBuzz (Radar score 5.6). A vast free library with native apps, but the terms ban pornographic content, adult images are blurred, and a 2025 UK advertising ruling banned a “No Filters” ad.
