Verdict
An uncensored, community-driven roleplay platform with a genuinely usable free tier, transparent pricing and a strong model line-up. Short replies, small context on cheaper tiers, no iOS app and regional age checks are the trade-offs.

What works
Free tier has unlimited chat on the basic models with the NSFW toggle available (subject to regional age verification) Pricing is published, tiered clearly and the 8 September 2026 increase came with a written grandfathering policy Wide model choice on higher tiers, including 70B-class and DeepSeek V3-class models, plus Semantic Memory 2.0 and a Memory Manager Age verification is documented in detail and handled by a third party that does not pass images to SpicyChat
What holds it back
Context is only 4K on Free and Get A Taste, and replies are capped at 180–300 tokens; there is no cross-chat memory No iOS app since September 2025 and no Play Store listing; Android is a sideloaded APK or the mobile web Conversation Images are limited to select characters on True Supporter, use an ageing DreamShaper-8 model, and TTS is top-tier only
What SpicyChat is
SpicyChat is a web-first, user-generated character platform for adult roleplay, run by NextDay AI Inc. of Montreal since 2023. The model is the same as Character.AI’s, a public library of bots with definitions, greetings and tags, with the difference that an NSFW toggle exists and is meant to be used. It sits between the big moderated platforms and the do-it-yourself world of SillyTavern: you do not bring your own API key, but you do choose from a menu of open-weight and large models depending on what you pay. Where rivals hide limits, SpicyChat publishes them, including the September 2026 price rise. The subscription names (Get A Taste, True Supporter, I’m All In) are a little arch, but the tiers behind them are well defined.

Chat and roleplay
Conversation quality depends heavily on the model you have access to. Free and Get A Taste users get the default 8B-class models (Stheno 8B and Magnum 12B are the names in circulation), which are competent at short, in-character replies but repetitive over long scenes. True Supporter opens “advanced” models in the 24B–70B range; I’m All In unlocks everything, including a DeepSeek V3-class model and SpicyXL, and lets you tune temperature, top-p and top-k. Two structural limits apply across all tiers: replies are short, 180 tokens by default, up to 300 on the two upper tiers, and the context window is small (4K on Free and Get A Taste, 8K on True Supporter, 16K on I’m All In). Even the top tier holds only roughly a hundred short messages in working memory. The community is large and the library is genuinely uncensored within the platform’s rules; quality of user-made characters varies as much as anywhere else. Queue priority is an I’m All In perk; free users wait behind subscribers at busy times.
Memory
SpicyChat’s answer to the small context is Semantic Memory 2.0 and the Memory Manager. Semantic Memory condenses conversation into compact memories, processed in batches of four from the last eight to ten messages, or sixty at a time when you reopen an old chat, and retrieves the most relevant ones when generating a reply. The Memory Manager, included from Get A Taste upward, lets you read, edit, pin, add or delete those memories; edits to messages do not update the memories, which you must maintain by hand. It works within a conversation and, as reported, not across separate chats with the same character. Persona slots (10, 50 and 100 by tier) store who you are. It is a sensible design for a platform built on cheap inference, but memory remains a weaker point than on companion apps that keep one persistent partner.
Models and technology
SpicyChat is unusually open about its stack. The documentation lists more than a dozen open-weight roleplay models by name and ties each to a subscription tier. Free accounts get SpicyChat Default and TheSpice, both 8B Llama-family fine-tunes. Get A Taste adds Stheno (8B) and Magnum 12B. True Supporter opens Lyra 12B V4, Shimizu 24B, Mixtral 8x7B and Noromaid 45B. The top I’m All In tier carries the 70B-class options (Euryale 70B, Midnight Rose 70B, Magnum 72B), WizardLM-2 8x22B, the in-house SpicyXL (132B) and DeepSeek V3 (671B), which the docs describe as ‘80x more powerful than our base model’ but slower.
Context is set by tier rather than by model: 4,096 tokens on Free and Get A Taste, 8,192 on True Supporter and up to 32K on I’m All In (the Premium Features page listed 16K until 2026), with replies capped at 180 or 300 tokens. The per-model figures on the AI Models page do not always agree with the tokens page, so treat individual numbers as indicative.
Image generation uses DreamShaper-8, a Stable Diffusion checkpoint, for both avatars and in-chat Conversation Images. There is no video generation. The text-to-speech provider behind the voices and the Custom Voices cloning tool is not disclosed. A bring-your-own OpenAI key option existed until it was sunset on 17 November 2025. Third-party reviews mention a ‘GLAM-5.1’ flagship that does not appear in the official docs; we treat that as unverified.
Images, video and voice
Conversation Images generate a picture of the current scene on request. They are available to True Supporter for selected characters and to I’m All In for any character, including your own creations, in Anime or Semi-Realistic styles. The generator is DreamShaper-8, a Stable Diffusion 1.5-era model that SpicyChat itself documents as prone to defaulting to white female subjects and ignoring some physical attributes; it is a long way behind the diffusion models used by image-led rivals. There is no video. Text-to-Speech is I’m All In only, with a small library of stock voices, unlimited playback and a narration mode that reads action text as well as dialogue. Avatar generation for characters uses the same image model.
Beyond chat: what else it does
SpicyChat’s extras are mostly roleplay plumbing rather than media. The free tier already includes a good deal of it.
Group Chat (free): two to ten characters in one thread, with manual speaker selection; Auto Response is premium. No images or TTS in groups.
Director Mode: a /cmd line under any message that instructs the model directly to shift tone, add a twist or break a loop. No tier gate is stated.
Lorebook (free, larger budgets on paid tiers): keyword-triggered world entries, up to 5,000 per private character, limited to about 20% of context.
Semantic Memory 2.0 (True Supporter) and Memory Manager (Get A Taste and up): automatic summaries plus hand-written, pinnable 250-character memories.
Conversation Images (True Supporter for selected characters, I’m All In for all): DreamShaper-8 renders of the last reply with anime or semi-realistic styles and an NSFW switch.
Text-to-Speech and Custom Voices (I’m All In only): unlimited playback, a Narration Mode and voice cloning from short clips. There are no live voice calls.
User Personas: 3 free, up to 100 on the top tier, switchable mid-chat.
/search: live web lookup folded into context.
Generation Settings (True Supporter and up): temperature, top-p, top-k and reply length.
Creator tools: analytics, profiles and a monthly leaderboard that pays in subscriptions, not cash.
Age verification via a third-party selfie or ID check is mandatory for NSFW in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states. Android is a side-loaded APK; the iOS app was withdrawn in August 2025, so iPhone users get a web app. Multilingual mode in 12 languages arrived in April 2026. There is no public API, no Discord or Telegram bot, and no video.
The free tier, honestly
The free tier is one of the more honest in the category. Chat is unlimited on the basic models with no daily cap, the NSFW toggle is available where regional law allows, and you can create and publish characters. What you give up is real: 4K context, 180-token replies, ads, the slowest queue, no Memory Manager and no images. In the regions listed below, NSFW requires a completed age check even on the free tier. As a trial of the roleplay style it is complete; as a long-term home it will feel thin.
Platforms and apps
SpicyChat is a web app first. The iOS app was removed by Apple for guideline non-compliance in August 2025 and stopped working on 25 September 2025; the company’s notice says reinstatement is unlikely and points users to the mobile web, which can be pinned to the home screen. The Android app left Google Play in 2024 and is now distributed as an APK from spicychat.ai/apps/android, which means sideloading. All features ship on the web first, and subscriptions bought through Apple had to be re-bought on the web when they expired.
Support, cancellation and refunds
Support is through a documented help centre (docs.spicychat.ai), a Discord community and an email/ticket form. Web subscriptions are cancelled from Profile Settings → Subscription → Cancel and run to the end of the paid period. SpicyChat publishes a refund policy (last updated 31 July 2024): fees are non-refundable once the account has been used, there are no refunds or credits for partial months, and payment methods that cannot issue refunds, such as cryptocurrency and Boosty, are excluded. Statutory rights such as EU cooling-off rules still apply. The September 2026 pricing FAQ is clear that any change to plan or billing frequency ends grandfathered pricing.
Who it is for
SpicyChat suits adults who want uncensored, community-made roleplay with a choice of models and are willing to manage memory themselves, and people who dislike hidden limits: the tiers say what they do. It is a poor fit if you want long, novel-style replies, a persistent single companion, high-quality images or a native iPhone app, and users in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and the listed US states should expect a selfie or ID check before any NSFW content.

New prices apply from 8 September 2026 in USD, with EUR matching USD and GBP raised in step (True Supporter £16.95/month, £169.95/year). Existing subscribers keep their old price for as long as the subscription stays active, paid and unchanged; any upgrade, downgrade, lapse or switch of billing frequency moves you to the new price.
There is no credit or token currency; limits are per-tier context, reply length and model access.
Safety, privacy and content policy
Terms. SpicyChat is for adults only and permits sexual content between adult fictional characters when the NSFW toggle is on. The prohibited list, as reported, covers sexual content involving minors or characters presented as minors, real people, and non-consensual or illegal material; moderation is applied to public character definitions rather than private chats. We could not load the terms page itself, so exact wording is unverified.
Age verification. Documented in detail. NSFW content requires a completed check for users in France, the UK, Italy and Australia and in 26 US states (including Texas, Florida, Georgia, Virginia and, from June 2026, West Virginia). The method is a video selfie with an ID fallback, run by third-party verifiers; SpicyChat states it never receives or stores the images or documents, only a yes/no result. Elsewhere, age is self-declared.
Data and privacy. Chats are stored on SpicyChat’s servers to provide the service; the privacy policy allows use for improving the platform. There is no confirmed breach on record as of September 2026.
Regulatory history. No fines or enforcement actions have been reported. The most consequential events are commercial: removal from the Apple App Store in August 2025 and from Google Play in 2024 for content-guideline reasons.
Marketing versus terms. Consistent. The site sells itself as NSFW-capable roleplay and the product delivers that, with the caveat that regional law now gates it. The one thing marketing under-states is how short and context-limited the cheaper tiers are.
How to cancel SpicyChat
Sign in at spicychat.ai on the web, open your avatar menu → Profile Settings, find the Subscription (or Manage plan) section and choose Cancel. Confirm the prompt; you keep your paid tier until the current billing date, after which the account drops to Free and no further charge is taken. If you subscribed through Google Play before the app left the store, cancel in Google Play → Subscriptions instead. Note that cancelling ends any grandfathered pre-September-2026 price, though the FAQ says you can reactivate before expiry to keep it. The published refund policy gives no refunds for unused or partial months; contact support for billing errors.
Questions people ask
Is SpicyChat free?
Yes. The free tier gives unlimited chat on the basic models with a 4K context and short replies, plus ads and a slower queue. Paid tiers start at $5.95 a month or $60 a year from 8 September 2026.
Does SpicyChat allow NSFW?
Yes, between adult fictional characters, via an NSFW toggle. In the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states you must complete a selfie or ID age check first.
How do I cancel SpicyChat?
On the web, open Profile Settings → Subscription and click Cancel; your tier stays active until the renewal date. Legacy Google Play subscriptions are cancelled in Google Play.
Does SpicyChat give refunds?
As a rule, no. The published refund policy says fees are non-refundable once the account has been used and partial months are not refunded, with statutory exceptions such as EU cooling-off rights on a first purchase.
Is SpicyChat safe?
It is a legitimate, long-running platform with documented age verification and no known breach. It is adult-only and uncensored by design, so it is not suitable for minors or for anyone who wants moderated content.
Does SpicyChat have an app?
Not on the App Store: Apple removed the iOS app in 2025. Android users sideload an APK from the official site or use the mobile web, which works on any phone.
Which SpicyChat tier is worth it?
True Supporter ($19.95/month) is the step-change: 8K context, longer replies, the advanced models and Semantic Memory. I’m All In adds up to 32K context, every model, TTS and queue priority.
Is SpicyChat down right now?
Live result from our monitor, which loads the public homepage every 15 minutes from a server in Europe. If the site is up but the app misbehaves after login, that is an in-app problem the check cannot see.
Alternatives to SpicyChat

Janitor AI
6.7
The largest free character-chat community, and genuinely free: text only, no images, no video. Memory on the house model is short, and quality dipped in 2026. Janitor+ and the Router fix that for a fee; a proxy fixes it for less.

Soulkyn
6.5
The most feature-dense roleplay platform in the adult space: eight-character scenes, dice and stats, explained memory, novels and songs. Unlimited free chat is gone, group chat needs the $49.99 tier, and voice and video lag.

Chub AI
6.4
The most flexible uncensored roleplay front end short of self-hosting, with shareable character cards and lorebooks. Billing in mandatory four-month blocks and a busy interface hold it back.

CrushOn AI
4.6
A large ‘unfiltered’ character-chat site whose paperwork does not match its pitch: terms that ban sexual content, an unreachable pricing page, credit-burning premium models, no refunds and no app. Capable chat, poor transparency.
