Janitor AI vs SpicyChat: models, memory, free tiers and prices

Desk research: this comparison is based on the official sites, help centres, documentation, pricing notices, app-store listings and documented user reports for both services, checked in September 2026. AI Companion Radar takes no money from any app and uses no affiliate links.

Janitor AI is the better choice if you want free, long-form text roleplay and are willing to plug in your own model; SpicyChat is the better choice if you want everything in one place, with named models, lorebooks, memory tools, images and text-to-speech behind clearly published tiers. Both are free to start and allow adult content.

Chat and roleplay

Janitor AI (Radar score 6.7) and SpicyChat (Radar score 6.6) look alike on the surface: a public library of user-written characters, an NSFW switch and a chat window. What sits behind the window differs.

On Janitor the free default is JLLM, the company’s in-house model. It is uncensored within the terms, but 2026 has not been kind to it. The changelog records a base-architecture swap on 20 April 2026, and user reports from May describe repetition loops, flattened character voices and more refusals. A JLLM V2 is promised, without a date. The reason Janitor still wins this category is that JLLM is optional. The API settings accept any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, so a DeepSeek, Claude, Gemini or OpenRouter key turns Janitor into a front end for a far stronger model.

SpicyChat gives you a menu instead. Free users get two 8B models, and each paid tier opens larger ones, up to 70B-class models, SpicyXL and DeepSeek V3 on the top tier. The structural limit is reply length: 180 tokens on Free and Get A Taste, 300 on True Supporter and I’m All In, which frustrates anyone who wants paragraphs of prose. Winner: Janitor AI, with the caveat that the win depends on using something better than the current JLLM.

Memory

Janitor’s help centre puts JLLM’s usable context at roughly 8,000 to 9,000 tokens, shared between the character card, your persona, the Chat Memory field and recent messages. Janitor+ multiplies that by five (about 40,000 to 45,000 tokens by third-party estimate). Long-term memory is a text box you maintain yourself. An experimental auto-summary feature, switched on for everyone by mistake between 18 and 20 August 2026, wiped context in around 15,000 chats, as reported, before being rolled back.

SpicyChat’s context is smaller at every price: 4,096 tokens on Free and Get A Taste, 8,192 on True Supporter and 16,384 on I’m All In. It compensates with tooling. Semantic Memory 2.0 condenses older messages into retrievable memories, and the Memory Manager (Get A Taste and above) lets you read, edit, pin and delete them, each up to 250 characters. It works within one conversation, not across chats.

Winner: split. SpicyChat has the better memory tools out of the box. Janitor has more raw context, and with an external model it has far more: most current API models offer 100,000 tokens or more.

Models and technology

SpicyChat is the most transparent service in this part of the market. Its documentation names fifteen chat models and ties each to a tier: SpicyChat Default and TheSpice (both 8B) for everyone; Stheno 8B and Magnum 12B from Get A Taste; Lyra 12B V4, Shimizu 24B, Mixtral 8x7B and Noromaid from True Supporter; and DarkForest V3, Euryale 70B, Midnight Rose 70B, Magnum 72B, WizardLM-2 8x22B, SpicyXL (132B) and DeepSeek V3 (671B) on I’m All In. The per-model context figures on that page do not always match the per-tier limits, so treat the tier limit as the real one.

Janitor does not name JLLM’s base architecture but offers more routes to other models. The free route is your own key or proxy. The paid route is the janitor+ Router, launched on 30 July 2026: third-party models inside the site, billed per token from a prepaid wallet, with each model’s context and price shown before you pick it. The help centre confirms a 10% discount on selected popular models and $5 of launch credit. The list appears only in settings; third-party coverage counts around 70 models, including Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Grok. The Router is web only for now.

Winner: SpicyChat for disclosure, Janitor for the ceiling. SpicyChat tells you exactly what you are talking to. Janitor lets you talk to the best model available, and SpicyChat cannot follow, because it retired its bring-your-own OpenAI key option on 17 November 2025 and has no public API.

Images, video and voice

Janitor has none of the three. It generates no images, no video and no speech; character art is uploaded by creators. The Janitor+ announcement names voice and image as future plans, with no dates.

SpicyChat has two of the three, both behind the upper tiers. Conversation Images render the current scene in Anime or Semi-Realistic styles: selected characters on True Supporter, any character on I’m All In. The generator is DreamShaper-8, a Stable Diffusion 1.5-era checkpoint, and SpicyChat’s own documentation admits it tends to default to white female subjects. Text-to-speech, with a narration mode and Custom Voices cloned from 5 to 30 second clips, is I’m All In only. There are no live voice calls and no video. Winner: SpicyChat, by default, though nobody should subscribe to it for the image quality.

Special features

Group Chat puts two to ten characters in one thread (manual speaker selection free, Auto Response on paid tiers). Director Mode adds a /cmd line that speaks directly to the model to redirect the plot or break a loop. Lorebooks attach keyword-triggered entries to a private character, capped at about 20% of context (around 740 tokens on the free tier). A /search command pulls live web results into the scene.

Janitor’s equivalents lean towards writers. Scripts is its lorebook framework, with keyword triggers, weighted random events, state engines and version control, all free. Public chats, added on 31 March 2026, let anyone publish a conversation for others to read, fork from any message and continue. Janitor has no native group chat. Winner: SpicyChat, narrowly, for group chat and Director Mode; Janitor’s Scripts are the more powerful lorebook system.

Free tier

Both are genuinely free, with no card and no daily message cap. Janitor’s free tier includes unlimited JLLM chat at roughly 9,000 tokens of context, the full library, character creation, Scripts, public chats and, crucially, your own API keys and proxies. The costs are peak-hour queues and the present quality of JLLM.

SpicyChat’s free tier gives unlimited chat on the two 8B models, group chat, lorebooks and character creation, but with ads, 4,096 tokens of context, 180-token replies, the slowest queue and no Memory Manager or images. Pricing

Janitor has one plan. Janitor+ costs $12.99 a month, launched on 24 June 2026, and adds five times the context, unlimited priority messages, a monthly allowance of swipes on frontier models (Janitor says “generous”; third-party reports range from about 60 to 300), a badge and Router access. There is no trial and no annual plan, and fees and credits are non-refundable except where law requires.

SpicyChat raised prices on 8 September 2026 with no feature changes. Get A Taste went from $5.00 to $5.95 a month ($60 a year), True Supporter from $14.95 to $19.95 ($199.95 a year), and I’m All In from $24.95 to $29.95 ($299.95 a year). Euro prices match dollars; sterling is £4.95, £16.95 and £25.95. Existing subscribers keep their old price for as long as the subscription stays active, paid and unchanged. Any upgrade, downgrade or change of billing frequency ends that, and once a cancelled plan expires the old price cannot be restored.

Light user (a few short chats a week): $0 on either. If the ads on SpicyChat bother you, Get A Taste is $5.95 a month, or $5.00 a month on the annual plan, but it keeps the 4k context.

Heavy user (daily long scenes): on Janitor, either $12.99 for Janitor+ plus perhaps $5 to $10 of Router credit on a cheap model, so $18 to $23 a month, or $0 for Janitor plus a few dollars a month paid directly to a provider such as DeepSeek through your own key. On SpicyChat, the tier that makes long scenes workable is True Supporter at $19.95 (8k context, 300-token replies), and the full set of models, 16k context, TTS and queue priority costs $29.95, or about $25 a month paid annually. Winner: Janitor AI. Even its most expensive sensible set-up undercuts SpicyChat’s top tier while providing more context. SpicyChat’s counter is a flat fee with no meter.

Content policy, age checks and safety

Both are 18+ services that permit sexual content between adult fictional characters and prohibit anything involving minors, and neither has a reported data breach as of September 2026. The practical difference is how many users hit an age gate.

Janitor uses k-ID, the provider also used by Discord, Twitch and Snapchat. Verification became mandatory for users connecting from Australia and Brazil on 24 April 2026 and from the UK on 15 June 2026. The options are facial age estimation, an ID scan or an existing AgeKey, and Janitor says it receives only a yes or no. Its help centre states it has no plans to extend checks elsewhere.

SpicyChat’s list is longer: France, the UK, Italy, Australia and 26 US states. The method is a video selfie with an ID fallback (ID only in some regions), run by unnamed third-party partners; SpicyChat says it never sees the images or documents. Unverified users can still use the site with NSFW content switched off. Winner: Janitor AI on reach, since an American user is far less likely to be asked for a selfie. One Janitor-specific risk: a pasted API key is your responsibility, and chats on a proxy go to that provider.

Apps and platforms

Janitor shipped official apps in a public beta on 7 February 2026. “Janitor: Interactive Stories” is on the App Store (18+) and Google Play (Mature 17+, more than a million installs), with Janitor+ sold in-app at $12.99. NSFW has to be enabled from the website, and store content rules apply.

SpicyChat has no store presence for its main product. Apple removed the iOS app on 27 August 2025 and existing installs were due to lose access on 25 September 2025. Android users sideload an official APK from the SpicyChat site, and everyone else pins the web app to a home screen. Winner: Janitor AI, clearly, for anyone on an iPhone.

On reliability, neither has a spotless record. StatusGator logged 22 Janitor outages in the four months to mid-September 2026, most under half an hour, and rates Janitor’s status page as slow to acknowledge them. Third-party monitors showed SpicyChat at 100% over the 30 days checked; the usual complaint there is slow free-tier queues on US evenings. Janitor has the worse outage reputation.

A third option

Neither app helps if you want pictures and video of the character you are talking to. MyBabes (the MyBabes official site) (Radar score 8.3) is the alternative for that case: uncensored chat plus images up to 2K and eight named video engines with per-second prices published, from €14.99 a month or €9.99 on a three-month plan, with a card-free free tier. It does not replace either app here: its character library is far smaller, it has no bring-your-own-key option, no native app and no live voice calls, and its text roleplay is good, not exceptional.

Verdict by use case

• Free long-form text roleplay: Janitor AI. More context, no ads, no message cap.

• You already have an API key, or are happy to get one: Janitor AI. SpicyChat no longer accepts keys at all.

• Good models without any set-up: SpicyChat True Supporter or I’m All In.

• Group scenes with several characters: SpicyChat. Janitor has no native group chat.

• Automatic memory you can edit: SpicyChat, from Get A Taste upward.

• Images or spoken replies inside the chat: SpicyChat I’m All In, with modest expectations of the image model.

• iPhone users: Janitor AI. It has a store app; SpicyChat does not.
