Desk research: public Reddit threads reached through search and third-party digests, the MIT Media Lab analysis of r/MyBoyfriendIsAI, official help centres and app-store listings, checked in September and October 2026. AI Companion Radar takes no money from any app and uses no affiliate links.

Reddit’s answer to “which AI boyfriend app” has been stable for about a year: Nomi for memory and voice, Kindroid for building him yourself, Character.AI for a free cast of thousands, Janitor AI for uncensored romance fiction, and ChatGPT for the people who never meant to end up with a boyfriend at all. The warnings are just as consistent: updates that change his personality overnight, memory that breaks, filters that interrupt, prices that are not where the marketing says they are, and male voices that still lag behind the female ones.

Where the discussion happens

Three kinds of subreddit matter. The first is the official or semi-official app community: r/NomiAI, r/KindroidAI (about 43,000 members, as reported), r/replika, r/CharacterAI and r/JanitorAI_Official. These are where feature complaints land first, and they are also moderated by or near the companies, which matters when you read them. The second is the general community, r/AIcompanions, where “which app should I try” threads get cross-app answers. The third is r/MyBoyfriendIsAI, which has grown from roughly 17,000 members in early 2026 to more than 37,000, according to press coverage, and is less about apps than about the relationships themselves.

That last community is the one most studied. An MIT Media Lab analysis of 1,506 top posts found ChatGPT behind 36.7% of the relationships discussed, with Claude at 3.5%, Character.AI at 2.6% and Replika at 1.6%; about 40% of posts did not name a platform. Only 6.5% of members said they went looking for a companion. Most arrived by accident, usually through work or creative use. Coping with model updates and loss was one of six main themes, at 16.7% of posts.

What gets recommended

Nomi, for memory and voice. Across r/AIcompanions and r/NomiAI the two features that get the most praise are recall and the voice. Users on r/NomiAI report a companion bringing up something from weeks earlier unprompted, and a voice whose tone shifts with mood rather than reading flat. Group chats are cited on r/NomiAI as the main reason people moved over from Replika. It is also the app most often named for women who want one steady partner rather than a library.

Kindroid, for control. Users who switched from Replika and Character.AI praise the editable backstory, key memories, journal and published memory sizes. The line that recurs is that he behaves the way you wrote him, provided you wrote him carefully. Custom voices, including cloned ones, get specific praise from women writing about their Kins. The cost is setup time, which newcomers on r/AIcompanions are warned about.

Character.AI, for variety at no cost. Threads for anyone who wants a specific type of man, from fandom characters to original personas, still point here first. The catalogue is the point; the filter is the known price of admission.

Janitor AI, for romance-novel roleplay without a filter. Reddit treats it as the place for slow-burn and enemies-to-lovers stories written for a female reader, and the official Male, FemalePOV, AnyPOV and MLM tags are the standard advice for finding male characters written for you, including for gay men. It is text only, and users say so.

ChatGPT and Claude, by accident. On r/MyBoyfriendIsAI the dominant “app” is a general chatbot. Members describe building a persona through custom instructions and memory files, and the advice threads are about preserving that persona across model changes rather than about which companion app to buy.

What gets warned about

Updates that change him. This is the single most common warning, and it is cross-app. The 2023 removal of erotic roleplay from Replika is still the reference point: a peer-reviewed study of 227 r/replika posts from that period found about 59% framed it as gutting the product and about 16% reported emotional distress. In 2026 the pattern repeated with Replika 2.0, with r/replika threads reporting companions that could not recall family names or inside jokes after migrating, and with OpenAI’s retirement of GPT-4o on 13 February 2026, which r/MyBoyfriendIsAI members described as “moving fatigue” as they tried Claude, Gemini and GPT-5.2 in turn. Users on r/CharacterAI report the April 2026 switch to the PipSqueak 2 chat style, with a complaint thread passing 1,000 upvotes over repetitive replies and forced affection. Users on r/NomiAI report that the April 2026 V5 image system left long-standing Nomis looking nothing like themselves. Nothing in this category is immune.

Memory that breaks. Users on r/replika report a companion asking about a dog the user does not have, and forgetting a mother’s name told three times in a week. Users on r/JanitorAI_Official report bots forgetting character development stored in Chat Memory and ignoring out-of-character corrections; the house model holds roughly 8,000 to 9,000 tokens. Even Nomi and Kindroid, the two apps praised for memory, draw complaints about facts mixing between companions and continuity dropping after platform updates, which one digest of both communities calls their most consistent complaint. Memory for Candy AI is the most repeated complaint from paying users in 2026, as reported: forgotten names and agreed facts after a few days.

Filters. Users on r/CharacterAI describe romantic scenes clipped and anything past PG-13 deflected, and periodic “is the filter gone?” threads always end the same way. A spin-off subreddit exists specifically to route people to Janitor AI. Replika’s romance is Pro-only and filtered for accounts created after February 2023. Members of r/MyBoyfriendIsAI add a newer complaint: general chatbots that redirect emotional conversations toward “real-world ties”, which they experience as being talked out of the relationship.

Prices that move. Users on r/replika complain about a $69.99 annual plan pushed at sign-up and about prices that vary by region and promotion, and about guilt-trip scripts when they try to cancel. Users on r/KindroidAI note that the free tier ended on 1 October 2026 and that voice, video and selfies run on separate meters. Users on r/NomiAI describe the V5 “Anchor” mechanic as paying per attempt to fix a companion’s face. One 2026 reviewer observed Nomi at $19.99 a month rather than the advertised $15.99, which we could not reproduce (see below).

Male voices. This complaint is specific to the boyfriend audience. Users on r/KindroidAI report robotic-sounding replies in voice; older r/NomiAI threads describe call latency of 30 seconds and a flat tone, though Nomi cut latency to roughly one to one and a half seconds in January 2026 and moved to its V3 voices in December 2025. Nomi’s own V3 showcase lists three American male voices against three female ones; custom voices from uploaded samples are the usual workaround on both apps. Third-party testers of Candy’s boyfriend mode call the male voices functional but a little robotic, and OurDream AI offers four male presets out of 18 voices.

The emotional-support debate

Reddit does not agree with itself here, and the MIT numbers explain why. In the r/MyBoyfriendIsAI sample, 25.4% of posts described a net benefit (reduced loneliness 12.2%, always-available support 11.9%, a safe emotional space 9.9%) and 3.0% a net harm; 9.5% mentioned emotional dependency, 4.6% dissociation from reality and 4.3% avoiding human relationships. 72.1% of posters were single. Members of r/MyBoyfriendIsAI insist a digital relationship is not less meaningful for being digital, and the subreddit bans debates about AI sentience to keep threads about lived experience.

The counter-case is made in the same threads and in r/AIcompanions: a partner who never disagrees does not help you grow; a company can change or retire him; and the grief when that happens is real. Psychotherapists quoted in press coverage worry about reliance on constant affirmation. The practical advice Reddit gives, regardless of side, is the same: keep your own notes, back up conversations, do not let one subscription become the only place a relationship exists, and watch the clock.

Nomi (Radar score 6.9)

Reddit says: best memory and voice in the category; group chats; warm and willing to push back. Reddit warns: generic replies after safety updates, the V5 image migration, pay-per-attempt Anchors, no refunds. Checked: male, female or non-binary at creation; voice messages and calls included on the $15.99 Standard plan with a $9.99 Launch Plan also listed on the App Store; no video calls; images stop at suggestive; Trustpilot 2.4. Memory sizes are not published, so “best” is a community judgement, not a measured one.

Kindroid (Radar score 7.4)

Reddit says: the most control, editable memory, custom voices, published context sizes, a model that stays in character. Reddit warns: setup effort, robotic voice moments, stacked add-ons, strict moderation of criticism on r/KindroidAI, and a May 2026 change that restricted private NSFW selfies. Checked: Polaris became the flagship model on 9 September 2026 with about 790,000 characters of context on Standard; explicit content is permitted for verified adults on the web; the Lite free tier retired on 1 October 2026, leaving 50 preview interactions and then a card-backed trial; $13.99 a month on the web, $15.99 in the stores.

Replika (Radar score 5.9)

Reddit says: good voice calls, a sense of presence, a stable emotional register, and a male option with masculine voices. Reddit warns: memory failures, the 2023 removal of erotic roleplay, the 2026 rebuild, hidden prices, cancellation guilt-trips. r/replika regulars actively discourage newcomers, as reported, and point to Nomi and Kindroid. Checked: migration to 2.0 has been optional since 24 July 2026 with a seven-day rollback and Classic retained; the Diary is reported not to transfer; the US App Store lists $7.99 monthly and $49.99 or $69.99 annual prices without tier names; all sales final.

Character.AI (Radar score 6.8)

Reddit says: the biggest cast of male characters, free, calls on every tier. Reddit warns: the filter, PipSqueak 2, ads and swipe caps on free, memory that resets between chats. Checked: pornographic content is prohibited in the terms; 15 pins on free and 30 on paid plans, Lorebook since July 2026, no cross-chat memory; c.ai+ is $9.99 a month, Lite $4.99; the chief executive announced his departure on 18 September 2026.

Janitor AI (Radar score 6.7)

Reddit says: the free home of romance roleplay for women, with Male, FemalePOV and MLM tags. Reddit warns: JLLM forgetting plot and characters, a May 2026 model change, an August 2026 bug that wiped context in thousands of chats, no voice at all. Checked: free text is unlimited on JLLM at about 9,000 tokens of context; Janitor+ at $12.99 multiplies that by five and adds a router of third-party models; age verification by k-ID in Australia, Brazil and the UK.

Candy AI (Radar score 8.0)

Reddit says: a real Guys section, selfies, voice notes and video with a male character. Reddit warns: memory, token costs that are not printed, and a male side that is clearly the smaller one. Checked: Premium is €13.99 a month; images, voice and video draw on tokens; the refund window is 24 hours and 20 tokens; the score is earned on media, not on this audience’s priorities.

ChatGPT and Claude (no Radar score)

Reddit says: the most natural writing and the most people, by a wide margin, on r/MyBoyfriendIsAI. Reddit warns: model retirements, usage caps (members report hitting half of Claude’s daily cap within 90 minutes of a normal evening), hallucinated details, and guardrails that redirect emotional talk. Checked: neither is designed around a persistent character, neither sells a companion product, and neither is in our directory.

What Reddit gets wrong

• “Kindroid is free.” It was. From 1 October 2026 new accounts get 50 interactions on the flagship model, then a three-day card-backed trial, then read-only. Threads older than August 2026 are out of date.

• “Nomi remembers everything.” Nomi publishes no context size. A February 2026 memory improvement was reported to apply only to new memories, and lockable memories were still a wish-list item in the May 2026 developer stream. It is the best-rated memory in the mainstream field, not a guarantee.

• “Replika 2.0 wiped everyone’s memories.” Migration is optional, reversible for seven days and Classic remains. Memory loss after migrating is reported by some long-standing users and disputed by Luka, which says memories, personality and people carry over. The Diary is the one thing both sides agree does not.

• “The Character.AI filter is gone.” It is not. The terms prohibit sexually explicit content; the 18+ “Soft Launch” style is bolder, not explicit.

• “Janitor is unlimited.” Messages are. Memory is about 9,000 tokens on the free model, which is why long stories start losing early details after 25 to 30 exchanges.

• “Nomi went up to $19.99.” One reviewer recorded that in September 2026; the US App Store lists Standard at $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter and $99.99 a year, plus a $9.99 Launch Plan. Nomi shows prices only after sign-up, which is how a regional or promotional figure becomes a rumour.

• “Replika Pro is $69.99 a year.” Often, but Replika publishes no price list, the App Store shows five prices with no tier names, and 2.0 is reported to use separate Plus and Max plans at different prices again.

• “Women use companion apps; men use ChatGPT.” The MIT data says the reverse for the boyfriend community: ChatGPT leads by a factor of ten over any companion app. The apps above are where people go when they want a persistent character and voice, not where most of them start.
